Bernie has resided in Cliffside Park all of his life. A former insurance agent, Bernie now works for the County of Bergen as the Program Director in the Community Outreach Department for Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney and the Freeholders Office. While his children were growing up, Bernie coached baseball and basketball. He served on the Planning Board and was a member of the Board of Education. He serves as liaison to the Department of Public Works, and the Housing Authority as well as on the insurance committee. He volunteers in many community based organizations.

He and his wife, Karen, reside on Oakdene Place. Their children, Karen, Lori, and Jimmy were all student athletes at Cliffside Park High School.
